STUDENTS from several higher education institutions in KZN protested on Sunday and yesterday.
Hundreds of students from the Durban University of Technology marched from Curries Fountain to Durban City Hall, demanding justice for late student activist Mlungisi Madonsela.
SRC president Sesiyanda Godlimpi said: “The security guards who killed him should be arrested immediately.
DUT spokesman Nduduzo Ndlovu said: “We are aware of your media query. Please note that we are gathering information so that we can provide an honest and factual response.”
At the University of KZN’s Bedford Hall residence, students threw beds and mattresses outside on Sunday and set them alight yesterday.
A source said: “Students said they have been complaining about the condition of their beds since last year.”
A car belonging to the university was also torched. A student said: “We’re angry because NSFAS said those who don’t live on campus will only get transport money.”
University spokeswoman Normah Zondo said: “The students have not communicated their grievances yet. A residence inspection team has been put in place to address accommodation issues.”
Students protested outside Mangosuthu University of Technology yesterday.
University spokesman Bheki Hlophe said: “The issues raised were allowances, infrastructure and fee increases.”
